Jan
& Feb. 2002 We spent this time making decisions on the various
systems and reading about yacht systems. This was fun, but very time
consuming. |
 |
Feb
2002 I picked up the 5 Group 31 AGM batteries at the East Penn DEKA
manufacturing plant near Kutztown, PA. This place is HUGE. If you need
batteries, this is the place. |

March
2, 2002 My first trip to Rock Hall to work with Rob Glebe. We mounted
the radar mount and pulled new VHF and Cable wires up the mast. The
upgrades have begun. See the modifications
page for details. |
 |
March
4 - 8, 2002 Rob installed the windlass, finished the radar, TV, &
VHF mounts. All the access holes were cut in for the new helm, battery box,
and B&G pilot.
See the modifications
page for details.

March
8, 2002 Crew party to get together and plan the Newport passage.
Wendy, Craig, Gail, Freddie & Greg all enjoyed a pizza party and worked out
the transportation details to and from Newport. Hey, what would a crew
party be with an Avon Dinghy called BUNS?
 |

|
March
11-15, 2002 Rob Glebe installed the windlass chain ramp, the battery
box modifications, and the nav instruments were cut in. Details were worked
out for the location of the battery switches, windlass switches, and cable
runs. The mast was reinstalled and the boat is moved out of the marina. Work
on the helm can now begin.
|

|
March
18-22, 2002 Rob Glebe continued on the installs working on: the
windlass wiring; removing the old helm and installing the new
helm;
fiberglass was added to the B & G Pilot shelf and the pilot was
installed; the battery box wiring was completed along with a custom
battery switch box; and the 125 amp alternator was installed.

installation....

23, 2002 Rob Glebe working on the solenoid for the
windlass. Check out the custom and creative work Rob did on the windlass
install.

25-30 Easter Break....went to the boat Sat, Sun, Tue, Wed, Sat
Sun! 3 Trips. Rob, Radeen and I worked out the Custom Pod
design and Rob welded the unit together. The projects are being finished
up, and soon we will test the systems.

Easter
Sunday. 3/31/02 We attended the Rock Hall Methodist Church, and
it was wonderful. Rev. Dore is the Rock Hall minister who is responsible
for 3 churches in town. He preaches at 9, then 10, then 11 as he hurries
to each church! What a wonderful speaker, motivating.
Windlass, battery bank, Emon II, B & G Pilot, 125
amp alternator, VHF, coax TV, and Radar wiring is all finished! It has
been 4 weeks of continuous work.

task.
Yes it all fits ! |
|
April
13 Removed the old name, and began to test the 12 volt system.
Used Easy Off oven cleaner, works great! |

April
27 Launch the rest of the fleet, Chessy and Buns. Radeen painted the
sail locker and it looks great!

May
4, 2002. The crew assembles for some test and a look at the new
systems. We had no wind to go sailing, but we did have rain and a good
dark night to go out and test out the radar system. We ran out at dusk and
waited till total darkness, then returned under radar in the rain. Great
experience.
Gregory worked on his dinghy handling skills, and he
tried his luck at fishing. Craig entertained us with his vocals and guitar
talent, very good. Freddie worked on Chessy and Buns making sure the
support fleet is ready to run. We ran the Chesapeake 22 down to the Kent
Island Boat Show, great show.

May
11 & 12, 2002. Our FIRST SAIL after 10 weeks of work, and way too
many boat bucks. We headed for Annapolis with IP31, Galleon's Lap. We
commissioned the pilot just off can #3, and we began to learn the chart
plotter. After a wonderful stay in Annapolis we had a fantastic sail
home with beam winds and the autopilot was driven by the chart plotter all
the way. PERFECT SYSTEM. We still have an EMON and Next Step problem. The
regulator will not release to float when bank is full. Need to solve this.

May
25, 2002. Memorial Day Weekend. Continued to work on the 12 volt
system to test the Emon and Next Step. Also working on breaking in the new
AGM batteries. At 525 Amp Hrs. I am to drain the bank to 10.5 volts at a
rate of 5% or 26 Amp load. The take the bank back to a full charge. This
needs to be done 3 or 4 times to properly break in the bank. The boat will
draw 20 Amps with EVERYTHING on, so even that takes 12 to 13 hours to
drain the bank to 50%. WOW, it takes a long time to drain this house
bank.
Tuned the rig. Took the sails off again, and
tighten the forestay and the cutter stay as tight as possible. The tighten
the rig looking for the backstays to tension the forestays. To me the rig
is still too lose.
We also compounded the topsides and this is when
the boat seems too big. She looks great! |
