B & G Pilot

The Project Begins...
pilot1.jpg (37637 bytes) 3/2/02 We are adding a B & G Type 1 hydraulic ram in the sail locker along with an Edson arm bolted to the 2" rudder post.
pilot2.jpg (36787 bytes) 3/2/02 A custom shelf of marine plywood and SS will be glassed into the bottom of the sail locker. The ram will be bolted into this shelf.
pilot3.jpg (32320 bytes) 3/9/02 The Edson 10" bronze tiller arm will bolt to the rudder post. (A 6" arm would have worked.)
Cutting an ACCESS HOLE....
pilot_access.jpg (19056 bytes) 3/9/02 RADICAL MOVE...An Access Hole is cut to allow easy access to the rubber post from the quarter berth. This also is needed for the install of the new Edson Below Decks CD-i helm.
pilot_access2.jpg (60279 bytes) 3/9/02 Look at all the access NOW. This is such a good idea that I think the factory should do this from new.
pilot_access3.jpg (40653 bytes) Look how easy it is to service!
pilot_full_port.jpg (31200 bytes) 3/9/02 Pilot arm in full port and full starboard position. Just checking if the arm will clear the cockpit drains. This arm is too long, but will work.

The Custom Shelf for the RAM
bg_shelf2.jpg (39559 bytes) 3/16/02 The shelf for the ram is under construction 3/16/02. This will have 2 to 3 layers of marine ply and fiberglass. The RAM will then be through bolted. A small cutout will allow us to reach in underneath the shelf for through bolting.
bg_shelf1.jpg (54932 bytes)
bg_shelf3.jpg (35038 bytes) 3/16/02 The RAM on the shelf in test mode....looks perfect! Testing the RAM in the full Starboard position
bg_shelf4.jpg (38229 bytes)The wire is the speaker wire from the original install, needs to be moved.
pilot_shelf1.jpg (20557 bytes) 3/23/02 The shelf is finished. This shelf is made of 2 layers of 3/4" marine plywood plus West System Epoxy, and fiberglass. The cutout is to allow access to the through bolts for the helm base.
pilot_shelf2.jpg (23462 bytes) 3/23/02 The shelf close up and the through bolts.
pilot_shelf3.jpg (39131 bytes) 3/23/02 The pilot ram and the tiller arm. The top tiller arm is for the new Edson CD-i Helm.
  The Pilot is Completed
pilot_complete2.jpg (54127 bytes) 4/6/02 The wiring connections are made to the APC control unit and the sail locker is given a fresh coat of paint.
pilot_complete.jpg (18253 bytes)
pilot_apc.jpg (28015 bytes) 4/6/02 The APC pilot control head was installed in the sail locker on the inside wall far forward. Junction boxes are in the same location for the NMEA bus, the SeaTalk bus for future growth.
pilot_rudder_ref1.jpg (22643 bytes) 4/6/02 The rudder reference is bolted to the headliner in the quaterberth. This area is enclosed with a 4" dropped teak box to cover the below deck Edson helm levers. The rudder reference is taped into the helm's rudder arm.
pilot_rudder_ref2.jpg (24242 bytes)
pilot_head.jpg (37969 bytes) 4/6/02 The pilot head is installed at the helm along with the radar and the VHF mic.
pilot_remote.jpg (16533 bytes) 4/6/02 The remote worked out very interestingly. We used the hole left from removing the old helm wheel break. The wire is wired directly to the APC head and when you want to use the remote, you simply pull the wire out. To store, push the wire back in. To secure, place the head in the cockpit locker and lock.
  Time to commission....
